John Vandriel

John Vandriel first became interested in trees and urban forestry while studying his undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph.  While there, he gained knowledge in landscape and ecological issues concerning trees and plant ecosystems through various courses and studio projects.

Originally from St. Catharines, Ontario, John's experience in the landscape construction and landscape architecture work environments has lead him to develop an interest in native plant material specific to the Carolinian Deciduous Zone.

John is currently completing a graduate degree in Planning at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he hopes to incorporate his interest in urban forestry and landscape together with the planning profession.

Favourite tree:  Tulip tree, liriodendron tulipifera

Kate MacKay

Kate's story is very similar to John's. She also studied Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph. Her real loved of hort blossomed while working as a summer student at the U of G Arboretum. She has a love of heritage landscapes and always loves to spot fine specimens from the Carolinian zone!

Kate's love of working with people led her to pursue a Master of Planning degree at Dalhousie University. While there, she learned a tonne and met many great people including two fine gentlemen named John and Todd. Talk of plants and all things landscape architecture and urban design ensued....and a blog was born!

Kate currently lives in Winnipeg, where park spaces, urban forestry and Elms abound!
